Tackling global food security and protecting ecosystems

The mission of the Hohenheim Research Center for Global Food Security and Ecosystems (GFE) is to provide innovative scientific contributions towards achieving food security while protecting the environment sustainably.

Food production and ecosystem services are interdependent and the pressures on agro-ecological systems are higher than ever before: on the one hand rising needs for food and biomass, on the other hand human-induced global environmental change.

Considering at the same time the global increase in nutritional problems, such as micronutrient deficiencies and obesity, new patterns of production and consumption need to be found, taking into account that resources – such as water, land, soil, nutrients and biodiversity – are scarce.

Researchers from different disciplines have to work together to transform the food system. In order to find sustainable solutions and to achieve impact, the involvement of non-academic knowledge holders in research and innovation processes is of increasing importance.

Transdisciplinary Research

In scientific literature, transdisciplinary research usually refers to the co-creation of knowledge between researchers and non-scientific actors. Therefore, given the complexity of working together from different perspectives and through different ways of communicating, it is necessary for transdisciplinary teams to select the right tools and methods to facilitate the effective generation and integration of knowledge.
