TROPENTAG 2024
Exploring Opportunities for Sustainable Natural Resource Management and a Better Life for All
11.- 13.09.2024 Vienna, Austria
This year’s Tropentag marked another milestone in the annual interdisciplinary conference dedicated to addressing key issues in agriculture, natural resource management, and rural development. From September 11-13, 2024, the city of Vienna became a global hub for discussions on Sustainable Natural Resource Management.
Organized by the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna (BOKU), in cooperation with ATSAF e.V., this year's hybrid conference revolved around the theme, "Explore Opportunities for Managing Natural Resources and a Better Life for All". The event brought together researchers, practitioners, policymakers, and development experts from around the world who shared knowledge, networked, and collaborated on the most pressing challenges in agriculture and natural resource management. The event featured dynamic discussions on various topics, including agroecology, food sovereignty, climate resilience, social inclusion, and sustainable resource management.
We at the Hohenheim Research Center for Global Food Security and Ecosystems (GFE) were well-represented, with our researchers contributing to key sessions and discussions. A highlight was Dr. Hycenth Tim Ndah’s presentation on the CANALLS Project, which focuses on driving agroecological transitions in the humid tropics of Central and Eastern Africa via multi-actor transdisciplinary Agroecology Living Labs (ALLs). His presentation underscored the importance of multi-actor collaboration in co-creating agroecological practices tailored to address the unique challenges faced by local farmers and communities. Additionally, Ferdinand Adu-Baffour presented the Mercury-AMF project, which ended last year. His presentation focused on local communities' preferences and willingness to contribute communal labor towards rehabilitating lands affected by small-scale mining.
Furthermore, many colleagues from Hohenheim, particularly from the Hans-Ruthenberg Institute for Tropical Agricultural Sciences, made notable contributions to the conference. Their presentations covered a range of topics, including accelerating sustainable transformation within agri-food systems, global competitiveness, and sustainability.
Alongside the presentations, GFE and the Hans-Ruthenberg Institute for Tropical Agricultural Sciences (HRI) hosted an information table where attendees could learn more about both institutions. At both tables, we showcased our research, initiatives, and impact while also representing the University of Hohenheim and emphasizing the University’s commitment to research, academic excellence, and sustainable development.
